Buckwheat Zydeco

Buckwheat Zydeco (born Stanley Dural, Jr. on November 14, 1947) is an American accordionist and zydeco performer. He is one of the few to achieve mainstream success.

In 1971, he founded Buckwheat & the Hitchhikers, a funk band that he led for five years before switching to zydeco. He began backing Clifton Chenier, one of the most legendary zydeco performers. He set out on his own with The Ils Sont Partis Band; they debuted with One for the Road in 1979 and were nominated for a Grammy Award for "Turning Point" and "Waitin' for My Ya Ya" (1985) after switching to the Rounder Records label. He soon signed to Island Records, the first zydeco act on a major label, and released On a Night Like This, a critically acclaimed album that was nominated for a Grammy as well. The band soon appeared in The Big Easy.

An especially powerful and haunting version of the Classic "Cryin' in the Streets" appears on the Benefit album for Hurricane Katrina recovery, "Our New Orleans: A Benefit Album for the Gulf Coast".

A native of Clinton, Black Potatoe recording artist Gregg Cagno has 4 CD’s and a 5th tentatively titled “Worth the Wait” set for release before the 2009 presidential inauguration... His ease of phrasing and clear, warm baritone communicates joy, pain, sunshine and whatever else comes to mind without pretense. His lyrics come sharp and descriptive with a twist of dry wit. His guitar playing is bold, bassy, smooth and soothing. Gregg has performed solo on stages from the Kennedy Center in DC to the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, as well as opened for acts such as America and James Taylor, and has one of his songs in the Smithsonian Folkways recordings.

New Jersey native and resident Mike Esposito is unique in the world of American roots music; his live shows are a virtual panorama of this country’s musical tradition. It’s blues, it’s bluegrass, country, rhythm & blues, rock n’ roll, Appalachian folk, New Orleans jazz and even a little bebop for good measure. A virtuoso performer on bottleneck slide, Dobro, lap steel, acoustic and electric six-string guitar and even electric bass and ukulele, Mike could easily adopt a swaggering air of braggadocio, the blues man’s traditional stock in trade, yet he remains a humble man, quietly exuding confidence in his talent and abilities.

It’s been a helluva year for Devon Allman’s Honeytribe. Just say the name Allman and many things jump to mind: the epitome of Southern Rock, the original “jam” band, legendary live shows. It’s a lot to live up to, but Devon and his band of tight-knit brothers of different mothers have risen to the occasion.
Allman, whose voice is reminiscent of his father, Gregg, and whose guitar playing calls to mind other six-string gods, has been honing his skills since his early teens, spending his formative years with his mother in St. Louis, MO.

Danny O’Keefe is a riveting singer/songwriter in the rootsy/bluesy Americana folk genre. In 1972, the legendary Ahmet Ertegun signed Danny to Atlantic Records, then teamed him with the incomparable producer Arif Mardin, resulting in his top-five Billboard hit "Goodtime Charlie's Got the Blues." Besides “Charlie,” Danny also had turntable hits like “Angel Spread Your Wings,” “Magdalena,” “The Road,” and “Catfish.” Not many (if any)
singer/songwriters can claim a top-5 Billboard hit, a song covered by Elvis,a co-write with Bob Dylan and a duet sung with Linda Ronstadt. Throughouthis 30-plus year career, Danny has also been covered by Jackson Browne,Jerry Lee Lewis, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Leon Russell, Mavis Staples, Maria Muldaur, The Blind Boys of Alabama with Ben Harper, and
Bonnie Raitt. And he has a voice to match his songs - a pungent, bluesy delivery that reflects in equal measure the influences of Jimmie Rodgers and Tim Buckley.

Meetwood Flack covers all the great hits of Fleetwood Mac, which has featured the talents of Mick Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and others over the years. The Fleetwood Mac story is an episodic saga that spans more than 30 years. It is the saga of a British blues band formed in 1967 that became a California-based pop group in the mid-Seventies. In between came a period where Fleetwood Mac shuffled personnel and experimented with styles, all the while releasing solid albums with chart topping hits such as Landslide, Rhiannon, Go Your Own Way, Don’t Stop, Dreams, Say You Love Me, Hold Me and many others. The band Meetwood Flack consists of some of the area's most talented musicians who are joining forces on this project to present these great songs as true to form as imaginably possible. March 14, 2008, Meetwood Flack will hit the stage at the legendary Stanhope House in Stanhope, NJ. Certainly a night not to miss!

"Ollabelle came together because of these musicians' love of this music, without thought of success or career or any of the other trappings of the modern professional music business. It has great value to our culture, adding new life to a tradition that is an important part of who we are. But mostly, they sound great. They sing great and they play great, and they are wonderful people." -T-Bone Burnett

Amy Helm—vocals, mandola
Byron Isaacs—vocals, bass, dobro
Tony Leone—vocals, drums, percussion
Fiona McBain—vocals, acoustic and electric guitars
Glenn Patscha—vocals, keyboards, accordion

A collection of songs of hard times, loss, compassion and hope" is how Fiona McBain describes Riverside Battle Songs, Ollabelle's second album and Verve Forecast debut. The 13-song set finds the New York quintet building upon the foundation of its self-titled 2004 debut, drawing from a deep well of gospel, blues, bluegrass, and country influences to create timelessly resonant music that honors the integrity of its sources while remaining effortlessly contemporary.

Jesse Winchester first gained notice as a protege of the Band's Robbie Robertson, who produced and played guitar on his debut album and brought along bandmate Levon Helm to play drums and mandolin. The album had much of the rustic Southern charm and rollicking country-rock of the Band. Winchester's other immediate appeal was a certain sense of mystery. A Southern American expatriate living in Canada, he was unable to appear in the U.S. to promote the album, which was released in a fold-out LP jacket that featured the same sepia-toned portrait (which looked like one of those austere Matthew Brady photos from the Civil War era) on each of its four sides. Winchester emphasized the dichotomy between his southern origins and his northern exile in songs like "Snow" (which Robertson co-wrote), "The Brand New Tennessee Waltz" ("I've a sadness too sad to be true"), and "Yankee Lady." Jesse Winchester was timely: It spoke to a disaffected American generation that sympathized with Winchester's pacifism. But it was also timeless: The songs revealed a powerful writing talent (recognized by the numerous artists who covered them), and Winchester's gentle vocals made a wonderful vehicle for delivering them. (Originally released by Ampex in 1970, Jesse Winchester was reissued by Bearsville Records in 1976 and again in 1988 by Rhino/ Bearsville).

Bluegrass legend, that would be all we would need to stay. Not since Muddy Waters has the Stanhope House seen someone who so summed up their genre of music. We are proud to have him performing and this show is sure to sell out. One show at 8pm. Advanced tickets are $40 and $45 at the door.

Although he needs no introduction, we'll go ahead and give him one anyway. Ralph was born in Dickenson County, Virginia, where he still resides when he's not on the road. After 55 years in the business, he's still the best banjo picker and tenor singer in bluegrass music. As a recording artist, he has performed on more than 170 albums, tapes, and CDs. He's also written many songs himself and with his brother, the late Carter Stanley. Ralph's played throughout the United States and in many foreign lands, too, including several tours of Japan. In addition to the many honors Ralph has received as a bluegrass musician, including membership on the Grand Ole Opry, he is also a Shriner, a member of the Primitive Baptist Universalist Church, and active in his local community, having served on the Dickenson County School Board. Ralph is married to Jimmi Stanley, and they have two daughters, Lisa and Tonya, and, of course, one son, Ralph II.

James Cotton (called Cotton by his friends) was born on the first day of July,1935, in Tunica, Mississippi. He was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters who grew up in the cotton fields working beside their mother, Hattie, and their father, Mose. On Sundays Mose was the preacher in the area's Baptist church. Cotton's earliest memories include his mother playing chicken and train sounds on her harmonica and for a few years he thought those were the only two sounds the little instrument made. His Christmas present one year was a harmonica, it cost 15 cents, and it wasn't long before he mastered the chicken and the train. King Biscuit Time, a 15-minute radio show, began broadcasting live on KFFA, a station just across the Mississippi River in Helena, Arkansas. The star of the show was the harmonica legend, Sonny Boy Williamson (Rice Miller). The young Cotton pressed his little ear to the old radio speaker. He recognized the harmonicasound AND discovered something - the harp did more! And he has been making it do more ever since.

Donna Jean Thatcher (Godchaux MacKay) was born to sing, and over the course of time she’s done so with people like Elvis Presley, Percy Sledge, Boz Scaggs, and Jerry Garcia. Now she has a new band that she’s quite certain is on a creative par with anything she’s ever done. “This band is a perfect fit for me as a singer/songwriter,” she said recently, “and I hope to be doing this for a long time to come. We’re having so much fun with this music!” The Grateful Dead alumna has joined up with six members of the next musical generation – Mookie Siegel (David Nelson Band; formerly Phil & Friends, RatDog), Wendy Lanter (Hope in Time), and Jeff Mattson, Tom Circosta, Klyph Black and Dave Diamond (Zen Tricksters) to form Donna Jean and the Tricksters.

The routes, and roots, of his blues are as diverse as the music form itself. It can be soulful, moaning out a people’s cry, or playful and bouncy as a hay-ride.

Guy can tell you stories of his great-grandparents and his grandparents, they’re days as track linemen, and of their interactions with the infamous KKK. He can also tell you that as a child raised in middle-class New York suburbs, the only cotton he’s picked is his underwear up off the floor.

He's a musician, composer, actor, director, and writer. But most importantly, Guy Davis is a bluesman. The blues permeates every corner of Davis' creativity.

Delta Moon

(973) 347-0458
Delta Moon formed in the late 1990s when Mark Johnson and Tom Gray lived within a few blocks of each other in Atlanta's Inman Park neighborhood. They got together regularly to work up arrangements of classic blues and original songs for two slide guitars. Soon, joined by singer Gina Leigh and a rotating cast of percussionists, drummers, and bassists, the band was playing festivals and nightclubs around Atlanta and the South.

Following the March 2002 release of their debut CD, "Delta Moon," the band started ranging farther from home. What really launched them on the national scene was when Delta Moon beat out over 50 other competitors to win the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January 2003. In June of that year they released their second CD, "Live," recorded at Tree Sound Studios in Atlanta. The band was voted the Best Overall Music Act in Atlanta by Creative Loafing Readers that summer.
