artists continually reinvent themselves; others identify their muse early on and spend their careers single-mindedly pursuing it, remaining recognizably themselves through a career-long process of refinement, growth and discovery. Chris Smither belongs to the latter group. Leave the Light On, Smither's masterful twelfth album, stands as the quintessence of his life's work while throwing in some new wrinkles that reflect where he's been and what he's encountered since the last time around.
When asked about his career-long predilection for mixing in outside songs with his own material, Smither says, "This may sound a little self-important, maybe, but I like to hold these things up and say, 'These are the people I consider my peers, and my stuff stands up to this. This is what I do, and this is where I come from.'"

Sonic Boom Productions is pleased to announce the release of recording artist CC Coletti’s debut CD, Woodstock Lane. CC’s scorching vocals are reminiscent of such female rock luminaries as Janis Joplin and the accompanying music brings to mind legendary bands like The Black Crowes, Led Zeppelin and Bad Company. The result is a collection of pure rock songs with a soulful and at times funky vibe. Woodstock Lane proves once and for all that rock music doesn’t have to be old to be classi
“Blessed with brassy pipes and charisma a-plenty…” - Time Out NY On March 24, 2009 Sugar Hill Records will release Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles’ second album for the label, ‘The Stars Are Out.’ The Paul Q. Kolderie (Radiohead, Lemonheads, Juliana Hatfield) produced album is a “fiery” (NY Times) ten song collection of five originals and five choice re-imaginations of Borges’ and Kolderie’s favorites including “Ride With Me” written by fellow Boston native Evan Dando. The album opens with the honky-tonk infused punk rocker, “Do It For Free” showcasing Borges’ smoky, honeyed vocals and scorching guitar work. This driving ode to an old flame would be right at home on the Sunset Strip in 1978 — Borges declares, “I never forget what my mama said to me, when it’s real love, you do it for free.” Originals “Me and Your Ghost” and “Symphony” combine the band’s rockabilly, blues and rock and roll aesthetics and center on Borges’ trademark lead vocals and capture the band’s raucous and good time live act. She takes “Being With You” (most famously recorded by Smokey Robinson) and transforms it into a bittersweet lament accompanied by gospel like backing vocals when she pleads, “I don’t care about anything else but being with you.” ‘The Stars Are Out’ is a worthy follow up to 2007’s ‘Diamonds in the Dark’which drew praise across the board from the likes of The Boston Globe (“the playfully charismatic Borges truly shines”), Time Out New York (“irresistible”) and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (“just a whole lot of fun”). Known for their relentless touring, the band recently received raves in the New York Times for their “vivacious” live show and Borges was awarded ‘Local Female Vocalist of the Year’ at the 2008 Boston Music Awards this December. A national tour is planned for the spring of 2009 following the release of ‘The Stars Are Out.’
In venues such as the legendary Stone Pony, The Cutting Room, Bluebird Café, Six Flags theme parks, as well as popular clubs throughout New Jersey, New York City, New Orleans and Nashville, many crowds have been won over by the unique power and sweet sound of the young talented singer and songsmith, Eryn Shewell. Her unique sound is often compared to her musical influences: the bluesy sound of Susan Tedeschi; the sweet sensitivity of Jewel; the power of Eva Cassidy. Eryn founded The Eryn Shewell Band in 2007 to showcase her original compositions and a few of Eryn’s favorite cover songs. Within the first year the band was nominated for three Asbury Park Music awards including best female vocalist. Eryn working closely with her band, Grammy award winning engineer Jake R. Tanner, and Aarius Studios, independently released her debut album, titled Window Pane, in September 2008 to rave reviews. Window Pane was nominated for Top Local Release and is currently playing on over 100 radio stations across the country.
A confident talent with a strong, emotive voice who can really craft her songs. Phillips is one of those under the radar gems that you are glad to come across. Delivering a tasty little date that’s right on the money whether kicking it out on originals or covers, Phillips has a quality that you wouldn’t expect from a Jersey girl that pulls you in with it’s heartland charm. Sets like this certainly show that indie is the new alt. (Midwest Record)
