Son of Political Pop
| 1. | Save Me | Play | Save Me
Notes
We had recorded this originally on the Angus album "Outstanding in Their Field". I wrote this song thinking about the voices in Angus (Kim Williams, Scott McDonald, Rick Lee and myself), so when we did the original I think we paid more attention to the vocals than what we could have done with it musically.
When we started "Political Pop" Chris Hedges had not yet joined the band, so we had done a few songs with our good friend Anthony Krizan. After we had a few labels interested in the record, they wanted to hear more songs that sounded like what they had received, so we brought Anthony back to do two songs..."Save Me" and "Higher". Anthony does some great slide on this tune. |

| 2. | Face the Day | Play | Face the Day
Notes
This song was originally recorded on the John Ginty produced Angus album "Face the Day". We didn't really need another version, we were just playing it out often and when we originally recorded it, we never added a solo. Chris Hedges kicks on this one. |

| 3. | All Right | Play | All Right
Notes
This song is just a different mix. I think Tom Gordon and I had sent a couple tunes to Carter Humphrey to do. Not that we thought we needed more tweaking, I think it was more to just see what Carter had in mind. Nice vocals (Kim Williams) and guitar (Chris Hedges) on this tune as well. Randy Artiglere and Tom Nelson do a great job holding down the whole tune.
This song originally appeared on "Political Pop", this is just a different mix. This was a tune that Kathy Phillips, Kim Williams and I played at least 200 time live before it ever made it to tape. There was a version the Megan Ernakovich, Tom Gordon, Ray Silva and I made earlier, but this song really came a long way via playing it live. |

| 4. | Higher | Play | Higher
Notes
"Brings You Down" is the first song heard off of "Political Pop". I would say that probably 95% of the interest we had gotten over this record has come from that song, which featured Kathy Phillips in a prominent call and response harmony. It also featured Anthony Krizan with some very tasty guitar riffs. This is the only other song that Anthony played on and we brought Kathy back in for some call and response harmony.
This song was originally featured on the Angus album "Outstanding in Their Field". There are two cool versions out there, being that we had two version of that record. One has some great guitar work from Walt Bibinger and another has some cool licks from Scott McDonald. This song and "Save Me" are ones that I have always wanted to do with Gospel Singers and have yet to find the right way to do it. |

| 5. | Right Beside You (remix) | Play | Right Beside You (remix)
Notes
This is one of the three or four songs that Tom Gordon and I sent to Carter Humphrey to mix. I think this one was the only one in contention for the original "Political Pop", but ultimately we went with all of Tom's mixes. Mr. Gordon brought a great presence to that record and it just would not have made sense to add one mix from someone else. Carter did do a great job though.
I view this song as a break out song from Randy Artiglere and Tom Nelson. The two of them actually are this entire song. Tom's drum part has cause many fill in drummers to stop dead in their tracks and ask often,"Is it alright if I just play it straight". "NO". And Randy's break down on the bass is killer. Randy really jumped into this one as a song. It seemed to me it was a turning point for Randy, when he stopped just playing a part and played entirely for the song. it was cool to see. "Right Beside You" was featured on the 700th episode of Fox's This Week in Baseball. One of the cooler moments for me in my musical career. |

| 6. | Wait | Play | Wait
Notes
This is the only song on "Son of Political Pop" that was not ever released somewhere else. This is also the first song that we recorded as the Matt Angus Thing.
Angus had just gone it's separate ways, for the 10th or 11th time (although what now appears to have been the last time) and we were really just experimenting. It was the first time I had recorded with Randy and we had Dan Myers (From Good Homes) helping out with the production. I was not sure if I wanted an outside producer, but if I had used one on this record, I would have loved for it to be Dan. The first chord of this song is a mistake. I went to play an "E" chord on the first take and I accidently hit it one fret higher. It was a weird chord and Randy just jumped on it, and well...there you go. Randy loves this song, I think it is pretty cool as well. It just didn't seem to fit in with everything else. I hope you enjoy it. |

| 7. | You Want | Play | You Want
Notes
This is another song from Angus' "Outstanding in the Field". This song we were playing very often and was crowd favorite live, so we figured "what the Hell?" and we recorded it. Chris Hedges has a great solo on this tune as well, that alone was worth re-recording it.

| 8. | Everything | Play | Everything
Notes
To redo this song was pretty random. I think we just were in the studio and thought," let's do that one and see how it turns out". We played this song on tour and it always had a great energy live, but I don't think it matched the original from the Angus album "Face the Day". It first appeared there in 2001.
Nice drums by Tom on this one and again a nice solo by Mr. Hedges. |

| 9. | Wake Up | Play | Wake Up
Notes
This is another redo from the Angus album "Face the Day". We were playing "Wake Up" live, so it just made sense on one of these sessions to lay it down. Tom and Randy were really tight and Chris did a great job on the lead guitar work. Chris adds and edge to this version that is not in the Angus version, probably because his guitar is smokin' and I was playing lead on the Angus version. I love the ending of this version. Live, we would actually let a much as a minute go by before we hit the last note.

| 10. | What You're Hearin' | Play | What You're Hearin'
Notes
This is the last of the "Let's see what Carter can do with it" Re-mixes. As always Carter does a great job. We did this song often live and really was a stretch for my voice, almost screaming by the end of the song. As I recorded the vocals on this I remember thinking,"This vocal is going to scare people. I should never sing like this". Which was met by Dan Myers saying,"That sounds great, you should sing like that more often".
This song was written after the race riots in Cincy, Ohio in 2000. It was pretty clear that no one wanted to hear what anyone was saying, there were agendas by the town and the police. They just couldn't see what they had done and what it meant to the African American's in the city. Then again, how long was Marge Shot the owner of the Reds? Anthony Krizan has some nice guitar parts on this song and Tom Nelson and Randy really pick up the ending. |
