Texas Smoke BBQ (click their logo for more info)
Jun 30, 2011
We are excited to bring Morris County's award winning Texas Smoke BBQ to the Black Potatoe Music Festival this year.

Don't take our word for it, the New York Times said this about their Beef Brisket "The brisket was tender, moist and savory, with crispy edges — just the way I like it.". Comparing them to other Bar-B-Que joints the Star Ledger said this "But in our American barbecue showdown, Texas Smoke Barbecue in Rockaway left Hot Rods at the starting line." and, "The result: ribs that are smoky, meaty, dry-rubbed wonders...".

Here are just a few of their awards:

2006 Asbury Park NJ BEST BRISKET
2007 Champions of the Grill BEST RIBS
2007 Champions of the Grill BEST CHICKEN
2008 Monmouth County Fair 2ND PLACE PULLED PORK
2008 Champions of the Grill BEST OVERALL RIBS
2008 Champions of the Grill BEST SMOKED BRISKET
2008 Champions of the Grill BEST SMOKED CHICKEN
2008 Champions of the Grill BEST SMOKED PORK
2008 Sussex County Champions of the Grill OVERALL BEST SMOKER
2009 Monmouth County Fair 2nd PLACE RIBS

The 15th Annual Black Potatoe Music Festival
May 17, 2011
15th Annual Black Potatoe Music Festival to Mark Key Anniversary and the End of an Era. This Will Mark the Last Year Festival Will Be Held at The Red Mill Museum.

CLINTON, NJ (May 16, 2011) – The Black Potatoe Festival is proud to celebrate it’s 15th anniversary at the same place it started and has been for the last 15 years, The Red Mill Museum in Clinton, NJ. However, the festival has grown in those 15 years. What started as a 1/2 day, 6 band, CD release celebration for festival founder Matt Angus’ band “Angus” , has become one of the premiere annual festivals in the northeast celebrating independent music and has grown to four days and 36 bands.

“We have grown up as a festival here at the Red Mill”, says Angus. “I started this festival in my twenties and now I am in my forties. It has been a long time and an amazing journey. We have been lucky enough to have the support of so many people in Clinton. The Board and Staff of the Red Mill, the Clinton Police, the Fire Department and the politicians have all been extremely supportive. We have had the support of all the mayors since we started… Republicans, Democrats and even Democrats turned Republican. And the residents have been amazing as well. Without a doubt the most fantastic thing about the last 15 year for me has been our fans, our “potatoeheadz”. We could not ask for more than they have given to us. They already follow us wherever we go around the state, over the years they have even taken bus trips with us to Washington DC, Philadelphia and New York City. However, not unlike a child leaving for school or moving out, it is time for Black Potatoe to grow. Parking in Clinton has always been a challenge, and with increased attendance and publicity for the event we need to find a venue that can support the festival’s continued growth. I remain a board member of The Red Mill Museum, of which I am proud, and I am enthusiastic about The Mill and it’s future.”

The site for next year’s festival has yet to be determined, according to Angus. “We have had some offers, but we need to research a few locations, talk to local Chambers and Towns and see what would be a good fit. We want to help an area that can use the extra stimulus to it’s economy and a community that we can grow together with. Most importantly we want those who have supported us to be comfortable with where we land. It is an exciting time.“

The 15th Annual festival takes place at the Red Mill Museum in Clinton, NJ, Thursday, July 14 through Sunday July 17. Pre-sale tickets are on sale now at www.blackpotatoe.com .

Pinetop Perkins has passed.

A few years ago The Matt Angus Thing was lucky enough to record with Pinetop Perkins. We met him one night about 6 or 7 years ago when George Kilby Jr. brought him to our gig, the night before Thanksgiving, to sit in with us. The relationship progressed and George and Pinetop recorded quite a few tracks with us in the fall of '06.

Pinetop was kind, cool, a gentleman and we had a blast working with him. He was an inspiration and one of the best ambassadors for the Blues. One of the last times I saw Pinetop play he was sitting in with Hubert Sumlin & Sean Costello at Antone's in Austin. The history on that stage was amazing, not to mention the two english guys that seemed to float through the crowd and stand right in front of me. His influence was so great. That night it was Robert Plant and Elvis Costello (no relation to Sean) that had crammed into Antone's. He was not just a father of the modern Blues, but Rock n'Roll as well. It was an honor to work with him.

Thank you Pinetop. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, Pat Morgan and the folks at Blue Mountain. His team was really solid and they did a great job of taking care of him for many years. Thanks to George Kilby Jr. who brought Pinetop to sit in with us many years ago. Safe travels Pinetop. A shave and a haircut ... two bits.

Peace,

Matt
